115-1 Course Add, Placement Exam, and Waiving (Freshman and Sophomore English)

I. How to take Freshman English, Sophomore English, and ELC Elective classes
【Freshman English (FENM)】

Application Duration: September 13 (Sunday, 8:00 a.m.) to 16 (Wednesday, 5:00 p.m.), 2026

Online Registration: ELC Application Form (no need to apply in-person) (Before taking Freshman English classes, students must take English Placement Exam.)

■ After receiving the applications, the ELC will arrange your course by September 18 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.).  And then the ELC will send applicants an email notice.

■ If applicants do not get emails or the class schedules do not show Freshman English classes by September 18 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.), please contact the ELC by September 21 (Monday).

【ELC Elective】

■ Students are allowed to register on the pre-registration and the first period of online course registration in Student Information System, and manual add.

Manual Add:
(1) Students are allowed to ask teachers by in-person if any seats are available.
(2) Application Duration: September 14 (Monday) to 24 (Thursday), 2026.

II. English Placement Exam

Purpose: (1) Freshman English course taking (2) Freshman and Sophomore English waiving (Type II)

■ Eligible Applicants:

(1) Freshmen students and transfer students in academic year 2026-2027 (No need to sign up)

(2) If you are not Freshmen and transfer students in academic year 2026-2027 and have not take the English Placement Exam yet (No need to sign up.  Just take the exam with Transfer Students.)

Date: September 9 (Wednesday), 2026 

Time: 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

■ Please bring the Identity Card or Student ID Card, a 2B pencil, and an eraser.

Venue: Seating Charts is as Attached. (TBA)

Note:

(1) After the Placement Exam on September 9, Freshman students will be added to a "Freshman English" course by Sunday, September 13.  Other students need to follow the following steps to do Freshman English course manual add

(2) Students who want to waive the Freshman and Sophomore English need to apply here.

Online Make-up Exam: September 9 (Wednesday; 4:30 p.m.) to September 18 (Friday; 8:00 a.m.) (Check the attachment "how to log in and take the exam")

(1) Login to iLearn digital platform (https://ilearn.thu.edu.tw/course/19224#/) with your Tunghai username and password.

(2) Each student can do the exam only once.  The exam lasts 70 minutes.  There are Listening section (20 questions) and Reading section (40 questions).

(3) Please do the Freshman English Online Manual Add Application by September 18 (Friday; 5:00 p.m.).

 


III. FENM and SENM Waiving Policy

Application Duration: September 7 (Monday) to September 18 (Friday), 2026 (For Option II applicants, please check if you are eligible after September 14.)

Eligible Applicants: Feshman and Transfer students in academic year 2026-2027 (except the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature)

Notes:

(1) After submitting your application, you can check the Student Information System for the FENM & SENM Waiving Result within 2-3 days.

(2) Please email the ELC any changes required by September 23 (Wednesday), 2026.

(3) Once your application is approved, please check your class schedule.  If you still have a freshman English course in your class schedule, please sign up for course drop from the Student Information System by yourself.

(4) After students have received approval to waive Freshman and Sophomore English, they don't need to take the Freshman and Sophomore English courses.  However, students need to take other courses to meet the 8-credit requirement.  On the student's transcript, instead of a grade, Freshman and Sophomore English courses will be shown as "EX" (Exempt) and will not be included in the GPA.  The number of credits for both Freshman and Sophomore English courses is 0 credits.  Waiving cannot be withdrawn.  Applicable to new students enrolling in the 115 Academic Year and following.  (For transfer students, the number of credits to be made up shall be determined in accordance with the applicable Required Course List.)

(5) Students who can waive Freshman English and Sophomore English must first pay the full amount of the tuition and miscellaneous fees, including the "Language Fee”, and enter their postal savings or bank account number in the Student Information System. The school will process the refund for the "Language Fee" each semester once it has been confirmed that the tuition and registration fees for that term have been paid in full.
