114 AY 2nd semester: How to take Freshman English, Sophomore English, and ELC Elective classes
【Freshman English (FENM)】

■ Manual Add Only
■ Application Duration: February 22 (Sunday, 8:00 a.m.) to March 2 (Monday, 5:00 p.m.), 2026
■ Online Registration: ELC Application Form (no need to apply in-person) (Before taking Freshman English classes, students must take English Placement Exam.)
■ After receiving the applications, the ELC will arrange your course by March 4 (Wednesday, 5:00 p.m.). And then the ELC will send applicants an email notice.
■ If applicants do not get emails or the class schedule do not show Freshman English classes by March 6 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.), please contact the ELC by March 6 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.).
【Sophomore English (SENM)】
■ Introduction: (link)
■ Method: the pre-registration (only for sophomore students-department's designated time slots), the first period of online course regustration (for sophomore students add their department's designated time slots; junior students or above (Day-Division) can add Extension-Division courses during this period), the second period of online course registration (junior students or above can add SENM courses in other departments during this period) in Student Information System and manual add.
■ Manual Add:
(1) Application Duration: February 27 (Friday, 8:00 a.m.) to March 2 (Monday, 5:00 p.m.), 2026
(2) Online Registration: ELC Application Form (no need to apply in-person)
(3) After receiving the applications, the ELC will arrange your course by March 4 (Wednesday, 5:00 p.m.). And then the ELC will send applicants an email notice.
(4) If applicants do not get emails or the class schedule do not show Sophomore English classes by March 6 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.), please contact the ELC by March 6 (Friday, 5:00 p.m.).
【ELC Elective】

■ Manual Add:
(1) Students are allowed to ask/email teachers if any seats are available.
(2) Application Duration: February 23 (Monday) to March 6 (Friday), 2026.

【114 AY 2nd semester: English Placement Exam】
■ Purpose: (1) Freshman English course taking; (2) Freshman and Sophomore English waiving (Option II)
■ Eligible Applicants: (1) Winter transfer students in academic year 2025-2026; (2) Other students
■ Online Test Duration: January 12 (Monday; 8:00 a.m.) to March 1 (Sunday), 2026
■ How to Take the Exam: (Check the attachment "how to log in and take the exam")
(1) Can only be completed on a computer.
(2) Login to iLearn digital platform (https://ilearn.thu.edu.tw/course/19224#/) with your Tunghai username and password.
(3) Each student can do the exam only once. The exam lasts 70 minutes. There are Listening section (20 questions) and Reading section (40 questions).
■ After taking the Placement Exam:
(1). Students who want to take the Freshman English course need to fill out the “Online Manual Add Application Form”.
(2). Students who want to waive the Freshman and Sophomore English need to apply here.

■ Introduction: (link)
■ Application Duration: February 23 (Monday) to March 6 (Friday), 2026 (For Option II applicants, please check if you are eligible after Monday, March 2.)
■ Eligible Applicants: Feshman and transfer students in academic year 2025-2026 (except the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature)
■ Policy: (as attachment) (You must follow the instruction to complete your application: Click here to check Online Application Steps)
■ Notes:
(1) After submitting your application, you can check the Student Information System for the FENM & SENM Waiving Result within 2-3 days.
(2) Please email the ELC any changes required by March 13 (Friday), 2026.
(3) Once your application is approved, please check your class schedule. If you still have a freshman English course in your class schedule, please sign up for course drop from the Student Information System by yourself.
(4) After students have received approval to waive Freshman and Sophomore English, they don't need to take the courses. However, students need to take other courses to meet the 10-credit requirement. On the student's transcript, instead of a grade, Freshman and Sophomore English courses will be shown as "EX" (Exempt) and will not be included in the GPA. The number of credits for both Freshman and Sophomore English courses is 0 credits.
(5) Waiving cannot be withdrawn.
(6) Applicable to students enrolling in the 114 Academic Year and following.
