  • SENM (Sophomore English for Non-English Majors) Waiving

Qualification:
For freshmen and transfer students only.
Students can waive SENM (Sophomore English for Non-English Majors) only during their freshman year at Tunghai.  Application may be made only once.

Application Date:
Around in May and June each year.  The exact date will be announced separately.

Exam Taken Date:
Only accept exams taken two years before your enrollment.  The exact date will be announced separately.

Steps of the on-line application:

  1. Fill out the online application form from the Student Information System: https://fsis.thu.edu.tw (Application Procedure: http://ithu.tw/swaiveproc)
  2. There is no need to provide the original hard copy of the transcript, diploma, or certificate to the ELC for verification.  Students are legally responsible for providing accurate and complete information.
  3. The official list of students who may waive SENM will be announced on the website (https://fsis.thu.edu.tw).


Waiver Requirement (Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements and provide the transcript or certificate):

  1. GEPT Intermediate Listening and Reading Test or above
  2. TOEFL iBT test score 52 or above
  3. TOEFL ITP test score 480 or above
  4. TOEIC Listening and Reading Test overall score of 550 or above, Listening score of 275 or above, and Reading Score of 275 or above
  5. IELTS band score Band 5 or above
  6. FLPT English score 195 or above
  7. Cambridge Main Suite PET or above
  8. BULATS score ALTE Level 2 or above
  9. Linguaskill Business/General score 140 or above
  10. Anglia Ascentis Intermediate or above
  11. BESTEP Listening and Reading Test each score of 70 or above, and Speaking Test score of 230 or above, and Writing Test score of 230 or above
  12. Other equivalent certificates varified by the ELC


Notes:

  1. After students have received approval to waive Sophomore English, they don’t need to take the Sophomore English courses.  However, students need to take other courses to meet the 4-credit requirement.  On the student’s transcript, instead of a grade, Sophomore English courses will be shown as “EX” (Exempt) and will not be included in the GPA.  The number of credits for the Sophomore English courses is 0 credits.

    Waiving cannot be withdrawn.

    Applicable to students enrolling in the 114 Academic Year and following.

  2. Previous Policy: After students have received approval to waive Sophomore English, they will receive 4 credits in total for the Sophomore English courses without taking those courses. However, the courses will be shown as “T” (transfer credit) instead of a grade and will not be included in the GPA.
