For freshmen and transfer students only.
Students can waive FENM (Freshman English for Non-English Majors) & SENM (Sophomore English for Non-English Majors) only during their freshman year at Tunghai. Application may be made only once.

■ Application Date:
Around in September and February each year. The exact date will be announced separately.

■ Exam Taken Date:
Only accept exams taken two years before your enrollment. The exact date will be announced separately.

■ Steps of the on-line application:

1. Fill out the online application form from the Student Information System: https://fsis.thu.edu.tw (Application Procedure: https://ithu.tw/fswaiveproc)
2. There is no need to provide the original hard copy of the transcript, diploma, or certificate to the ELC for verification. Students are legally responsible for providing accurate and complete information.
3. The official results will be announced on the Student Information System (https://fsis.thu.edu.tw).

■ Waiver Requirement (Choose one of the following two options)
Type I. Paper Review (Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements and provide the transcript or certificate):

1. GEPT High-Intermediate Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing Test or above
2. TOEFL iBT overall score of 80 or above
3. TOEFL ITP overall score of 550 or above
4. TOEIC Listening and Reading Test overall score of 785 or above, Listening score of 400 or above, and Reading Score of 385 or above
5. IELTS overall score of 6.0 or above
6. FLPT-English overall score of 240 or above
7. Cambridge Main Suite FCE or above
8. BULATS ALTE Level 3 or above
9. Linguaskill Business/General overall score of 160 or above
10. Anglia Ascentis Advanced or above
11. BESTEP Listening and Reading Test each score of 100 or above, and Speaking Test score of 280 or above, and Writing Test score of 280 or above
12. Other equivalent certificates varified by the ELC

Type II. Students who meet one of the following requirements and score in the top 10% on FENM Placement Exam are eligible to apply.

1. Ranked Level 14 or above on the English Subject from General Scholastic Ability Tests for University Application
2. With a high-school diploma from an accredited English-taught high school domestic or abroad

■ Notes:

1. ALL applicants must take FENM Placement Exam.

2. After students have received approval to waive Freshman and Sophomore English, they do not need to take the Freshman and Sophomore English courses.  However, students need to take other courses to meet the 10-credit requirement.  On the student's transcript, instead of a grade, Freshman and Sophomore English courses will be shown as "EX" (Exempt) and will not be included in the GPA. The number of credits for the Freshman and Sophomore English courses is 0 credits. Waiving cannot be withdrawn. Applicable to students enrolling in the 114 Academic Year and following.       

   Previous Policy (113 AY and before): After students have received approval to waive Freshman and Sophomore English, they will receive 10 credits in total for the Freshman and Sophomore English courses without taking those courses.  However, the courses will be shown as "T" (transfer credit) instead of a grade and will not be included in the GPA.

    

3. Students who can waive Freshman English and Sophomore English must first pay the full amount of the tuition and miscellaneous fees, including the "Language Tuition Fee”, and enter their postal savings or bank account number in the Student Information System. The school will process the refund of the "Language Tuition Fee" the second semester after confirming the payment of the first and second semester registration fees.
